The Bistro
Bistro 221 has been satisfying the discriminating palates for over six years.  Proprietor and Executive Chef Kent Daigle offers a fusion of Continental and California Cuisine with a Southern flair with his original recipes for Gumbo 221 (customer’s say:  “The Best West of the Mississippi”), Maryland Crab Cakes, Thai Calamari, Tamarind Tuna – to name a few  - continue to delight the palate of the most discriminating diner.  Our dining atmosphere has been described as “reminiscent of Bistro’s in Europe” where Chef Kent offers an eclectic fare of Continental and California Cuisine with a Southern Flair.  The lunch menu includes crisp salads, a Kobe Beef Burger, our award winning Gumbo and entrees.  The dinner menu offers a variety of signature appetizers as a Starter to our entrees of fish, beef, chicken and lamb as well as pasta plates.  Don’t miss our signature desserts Louisiana Bread Pudding or a Flambe prepared tableside.  Enjoy a drink in our bar reminiscent of the ever popular Martini Bar where we offer over 40 varieties of vodka and gin and take a look at the historic photographs on display.

The dining room offers “Old World” ambience with its tapestries, antique mirrors and warm wood and has become a favorite meeting place, both social and business.  Diners enjoy the warm, silky voice of Donnie Finnell on Friday and Saturday evenings.

See you at Bistro 221 where you meet and greet new and old friends.

The History of the Bistro Building
The building dates back to the turn of the century (1900 that is!), with the land originally purchased in 1895 for twelve gold coins.  In the mid-1900’s it was the “Jenny Wren Café” and the meeting place for the Escondido Rotary.    Some of our customers with deep roots in Escondido have told us that during the “stagecoach days”, the dining room was a saloon and the upstairs, which was accessible in those days from downstairs, was a brothel.  As can be seen in one of our historical photographs, the Water Company was located next door, with City Hall next to it.

Chef Kent
Chef Kent served as Executive Chef at Valentino’s in Rancho Bernardo, The Elephant Walk at the San Destin Resort, Porta Romano  in Laguna Niguel, the White House in Laguna Beach as well as offering his culinary arts experience in England. Chef Kent is a graduate of Johnson & Wales University in Providence, Rhode Island with a degree in Culinary Arts
